Hey everybody! My husband is half-way through MS1 already (yay!) and we're starting to think about summer plans (he gets the summer off at his school). I'm curious...what did your husbands do during the summer after MS1?
Thanks in advance for your ideas, advice, and experiences! :)

My husband went to Equador for five weeks and worked with a radiologist and learned Spanish, worked with an ENT for a month, and then got married to me and traveled for our honeymoon.
Now that he is planning his fourth year and getting ready to apply for ENT programs he wishes he would have done research instead (and of course still marry me hehe).
My husband would now recommend any first year medical student try to figure out if there is anything he needs to do for the types of medicine he is interested in for residency and make sure he gets it done in this last long break. Live and learn.
Good luck!
we got married! he was done in early june, we got married in july and went on a honeymoon and he was back at school in august for msII!
in between msII and msIII, my husband did research, took step one and we went on a week long vacation.
i would suggest doing something FUN and not medically related!
We got married and husband was a teaching assistant in the incoming first year's anatomy class.
My hubby took extra elective hours in between M1 and M2. (These will count towards some extra free time at the end of his 4th year.)
Also had a baby! He was busy. :)
My hubs did research. 2 different projects. It was great because he had time to travel, plus get some good things done for the resume. Gives you a little bit of everything! Enjoy that first summer, you wont get any more off! ( at least we havent since!)
my husband did research assistant in the simulation lab at school. it was very nice for him to have something to do...he even got a couple weeks off and we did a many vacation when he started his second year about a month into it, we had our firstborn.
Wow, I can't even remember if my husband got summer off! If he did, I'm sure he just did research.
But I am inclined to suggest that your husband look for some sort of shadowing or elective he can do in a couple of fields he's interested in... That will help immensely in choosing rotations for the rest of medical school.
Good luck!
My husband actually worked for his school. He prepared the cadavers for the incoming year's anatomy lab (totally gross!). We also enjoyed a vacation with my family. I would definitely recommend your husband get a little bit of experience and also relax and spend time with you!
I feel very repetitive saying this but we had a busy summer getting married! We got married in July, and after the honeymoon we spent time getting me settled in!
I don't think he regrets not doing any research, he definitely needed some time for himself- to regain strength for the next year!
Good luck:)
My husband was military so he had to do a 6 wk training program- but I did visit him in San Antonio and we got a good vacation out of it. He also shadowed for 2 weeks.
However, he'd second what Jessica said- he wishes he had done research. The next summer was focused on boards and his 3rd year started July 1, so he's never had any research time and now that he is going into a competitive specialty, he really wishes he had and recommends it to others.
My hubster did research. It was probably the best decision he made in med school. Got a ton of publications, presentations, etc. Everyone on the interview trail LOVED it! And then we went on a week vacation. His school paid him for the hours he spent doing research. SAY WHAT?!? Med student getting paid! woop woop! ;) Good luck deciding!
My husband studied through the summer. But we were also able to go home and visit family It was an awesome break! Whatever you do, enjoy it!
My hubby is doing an Internship in Vascular Surgery and doing some research on genetic factors that cause DVT. :)
He does get a week off in between school and internship, so we are taking a little mini vacation back to Boston, my hometown :) He keeps calling it "The last summer of his life" LOL because apparently after the first year the summers can be crazy busy!!
He studied for Step 1 and we did a three week trip in Europe! I say live it up. It'll be a long time before we get another break like that :)
My husband is 6 days away from finishing year one (!!!) and since we know this is likely the last full-ish summer we'll get before Step 1 studying gets serious, we're trying to combine work and play. He'll be doing research the entire month of July, but at UC San Francisco (two hospitals) so I can come up for a few long visits ... KIND of like a vacation. I don't know of anyone in his class that isn't doing some sort of research this summer.
